Bishop Diego’s Greer Shull and Josie McCoy combined to score 31 of the Cardinals’ 40 points on Thursday, leading the Cardinals past San Marcos 40-32 at the Fillmore Tournament.
The Cardinals held San Marcos’ leading scorer from the day before scoreless.
“We played them enough in the summer time to know that she could hurt us so that was the focus, to not let her take good shots,” said Cardinals head coach Jeff Burich.
Shull led Bishop on the offensive end with 19 points while McCoy tallied 12 including a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Shull added eight rebounds and four steals to her stat line. Madison Ballard-Rozak added seven points for Bishop.
The Cardinals (2-0) face Hueneme (2-0) on Friday for a chance to play in Saturday’s tournament championship.
Following the Fillmore Tournament, the Cardinals will jointly host a tournament next week that will feature teams from all five of the smaller local high schools. Bishop’s home opener is against Laguna Blanca on Tuesday at the Brickhouse.
