Halie Johnson led San Marcos’ girls water polo team with four goals in a 12-5 victory over Fountain Valley, which happened to be the Royals’ season-opener on Wednesday.
The Royals have gotten a late start to the season, but are right back at it on Thursday as they travel to the Villa Park for three straight days of competition.
San Marcos had five scorers in all, with Hannah Koper adding three goals, Carlie Mack two, Riley Heiduk two, and Hannah Turk one.
Freshman goalie Jenna Phreaner collected 11 saves in the cage in her high school debut. Phreaner and Heiduk are two freshmen starting for the Royals this season.
“Because we had these two freshman come in, we have a pretty balanced attack,” said San Marcos head coach Brian Roth. “All and all, having those two freshman made the difference.”
San Marcos took a 4-1 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 8-4 at halftime before closing out the match by limiting Fountain Valley to a single goal in the final two quarters.
The Royals open up the Villa Park Tournament with Troy of Fullerton at El Toro High School.
