San Marcos’ boys basketball team achieved a rare feat in team sports on Saturday. The three-peat.
The Royals claimed the Coast Union Tournament title for the third stright season – and fourth in five years – by defeating St. Joseph 62-58 in the championship game.
“It was two different styles so it was kind of a battle of tempo,” said Royals head coach Jarrod Bradley.
Cade Ridenour came up big in the final for San Marcos. The senior connected on five 3-point attempts and finished with 20 points and nine rebounds.
The Royals led for most of the game but St. Joseph’s made a strong push in the fourth quarter. The Knights pulled to within one late but Ian Douglas converted a 3-point play to give the Royals enough cushion to hold on.
Thayer White was named tournament MVP for the second consecutive year as San Marcos’ all-important man in the post.
“He’s our senior leader, he’s just the heart and soul of our team,” Bradley said.
The Royals beat Stockdale 45-38 earlier in the day in the semifinals. All-tournament selection Chad Ridenour led San Marcos in scoring in that one with 12.
Next up for San Marcos (7-2) is its Channel League opener. The Royals go crosstown to Dos Pueblos for a big Wednesday league opener. Tip off is 7 p.m.
