Cate’s No. 1-ranked boys soccer team fell 4-3 on Friday to Pacifica in what was only the Rams’ second game of the season.
The top team in CIF-ss Division VII, the Rams (1-1) could not keep the Tritons off the scoreboard, falling behind 1-0, 2-1, 3-1, and 4-2.
“The good news is that we worked hard, never gave up, and eventually returned to the style of play of which we are capable,” said Cate head coach Dave Mochel.
Two of Pacifica’s goals came on penalty kicks, giving the Tritons a very early 1-0 lead and then putting Pacifica back up 4-2 after Cate had trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the second half.
Ema Boateng scored twice for the Rams and senior Avery Shwartz scored the other Cate goal and added an assist.
The setback for Cate came on the eve of a high-profile match with JSerra, the No. 1 ranked team in Division I. Both JSerra and Cate are ranked in the top-25 of ESPN’s national high school boys soccer rankings. Game time for that one is 3:15 at Cate.
