Elias Muñoz and Leo Schneider lifted Bishop Diego’s boys basketball team to a 59-49 overtime victory over Burroughs at the Santa Barbara Holiday Classic on Wednesday.
“We finally finished a game which was nice,” said Bishop Diego head coach Dean Prophet, whose team had given up several fourth-quarter leads already this season.
This time the tables were turned as the Cardinals were able to erase a six-point deficit in the final two minutes of regulation to force overtime.
The momentum carried over as Bishop ended up scoring 19 of the game’s final 22 points.
Munoz finished with a game-high 22 points while Schneider came through with a season-high 20. Each had their time.
Schneider scored all 10 points for the Cardinals in the first period. Then Muñoz took over in the second half and poured in 19 of his 22 after halftime.
“Leo had an outstanding game,” Prophet noted. “If Leo plays like that it will certainly help us inside and he definitely picked up the energy for the other kids as well.”
The win over Burroughs of Burbank puts the Cardinals in Thursday’s 3rd-place game at Santa Barbara High against Ocean View.
“I think it’s going to be a tough matchup wohever we play,” Prophet said while watching Ocean View and Clovis West play. “It will be a reminder of what we need to work to (for CIF playoffs).
The third-place game begins at 5 p.m.
