Mt. San Antonio jumped ahead 18-2 in the opening minutes on Thursday night and went on to defeat SBCC 87-54 in the opening round of the Mountie Classic men’s basketball tournament in Walnut.
The Mounties, ranked No. 12 in Southern Cal, outshot the Vaqueros 49 to 34 percent and outrebounded them 40-33. They made their first eight shots on the way to a 48-25 halftime lead.
J.P. Dodson led the Vaqueros (1-7) with 12 points. Kenny Thomas had 10 points and five rebounds. Anthony Williams and Cameron Nelson also scored 10 apiece.
SBCC commited 27 turnovers, leading to 28 points.
The Vaqueros will take on Orange Coast on Friday at 3 p.m.
