Providence Hall won its home opener on Saturday morning by dominating Ventura County Christian School 48-13 at Westmont College.
“We try to start everything with our defense. That will lead to our offense,” said Lions head coach Keith Luberto.
And Providence Hall’s offense was strong throughout the game. Its defense held VCCS down and led to easy baskets on the other end.
Right after tip-off, Preston Towers stole the ball and made an easy lay-up to get Providence Hall on the board.
Providence Hall’s trapping defense bothered Ventura County Christian, and produced numerous steals leading them to a 38-4 lead at the half.
“We tried to trap the basketball as it came across the court and kept backing it up,” Luberto said.
With a large lead in the second half, Providence began to work on its passing game and other areas of needed improvement.
Providence Hall was still too much for VCCS to handle as Nathan Dutcher hit a 3-pointer making the game 41-6.
In the fourth quarter, Bryan Briones stole the ball from a VCCS player and swished the ball from just inside the three-point line to give Providence Hall the final score of 48-13.
“They enjoyed it and we did what we wanted to do,” said Luberto.
