Providence Hall’s girls basketball team locked up third place at the Bishop Diego Tournament on Saturday by beating back the host Cardinals 52-39.
Sydney Hedges and Lacey Gonzalez paced the Lions with 18 and 17 points, respectively. The duo spearheaded Providence Hall’s second half which saw the Lions turn a deficit into a 13-point victory.
Bishop owned a 20-19 lead at halftime but the Lions came out and outscored the Cardinals 18-7 in the third quarter. Hedges was a force in the third quarter and Gonzalez cleaned up in the fourth.
Greer Shull tallied a game-high 21 points for the Cardinals, who also got 10 points and eight rebounds from all-tournament selection Josie McCoy. Charlie Fling also grabbed eight rebounds for Bishop Diego, which is 4-4 on the season after dropping 3-of-4 games in its tournament.
“Providence did a good job of just running the floor,” said Cardinals head coach Jeff Burich.
Bishop Diego plays again on Monday, heading to Carpinteria for the rivals’ one clash of the season.
