Carl Fredrickson hadn’t been shooting the ball well in four games at the Jim Bashore Classic but the tallest player on Santa Ynez’s boys basketball team knocked down the big shot when the Pirates needed it most.
Playing the host Carpinteria Warriors on Tuesday, Fredrickson hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining that ended up being the game-winner in a 34-32 win for the Pirates.
“It feels pretty good, especially since I’ve been airballing the last three games,” Fredrickson said.
The victory was doubly satisfying for Fredrickson and the Pirates because the Warriors had beaten them by 17 just two weeks ago at the Fillmore Tournament.
“It was kind of a vengeance for our whole team coming back for this,” Fredrickson said. “We were ready to play. It felt great to hit that shot there.”
Fredrickson finished with 10 points while Clinton Anderson led the Pirates with 12. Santa Ynez won despite only having four players in the scoring column.
The Warriors featured seven players who scored but only Kevyn Crocker reached double figures with 11. Crocker added six rebounds and two steals to his totals.
“We didn’t come out ready to play but we battled back in the second half,” said Warriors head coach Johnny Ward.
Carpinteria staked Santa Ynez to a 12-4 lead after the first quarter but outscored the Pirates in each of the final three periods.
The Warriors took their first lead since the first quarter early on in the final frame and held the lead until Fredrickson’s game-winner. The Warriors had a chance to tie or win but Santa Ynez dodged a couple of attempts.
“We didn’t execute properly down the stretch and it ended up hurting us,” Ward said.
Ward’s squad plays again on Thursday against Channel Islands, who just beat the Warriors on Saturday. The Warriors host the Raiders at 7 p.m.
