In the closest game since losing the opener to Valencia, Dos Pueblos’ girls basketball team defeated Saugus 63-55 at the Gold Coast Tournament.
The Chargers led by 15 at halftime but Saugus creeped back into the game in the second half. Saugus never had it below six in the fourth quarter and DP improved to 5-1 on the season.
Jessica Escalante posted a double-double of the points-steals variety. Her totals were 21 points, 12 steals, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds. Chiara DiMarco had 18 points and three steals. Escalante, DiMarco, and Natalie Hilton made it tough for Saugus to operate on the perimeter because of their pressure defense.
“I’ve been telling the girls,” said Chargers head coach Jelani Hicks. “Shooting is going to come and go, defense is every game.”
Dos Pueblos gets Santa Ynez in the next Gold Coast Tournament game on Thursday at San Marcos High.
