Dos Pueblos’ girls basketball team topped the century mark on Thursday, beating down Cabrillo 101-18 at the Bryan Ayer Classic in Lompoc.
The Chargers featured five players who scored 14 or more points, but DP head coach Jelani Hicks credited his defense for his team’s success.
“We scored a lot of points, we did a lot of good things, but it definitely wasn’t perfect,” Hicks said.
Dos Pueblos kept up the defensive pressure for most of the game, starting with a full-court press in the first half and finishing with suffocating man-to-man defense in the second half. The Charger defense was especially tight in the second half, limiting Cabrillo to three points in the final two periods.
It was 59-15 at halftime.
Kristen Gowdy led all scorers with 23 points and added 11 rebounds. Chiara DiMarco added 21, Jasmine Mata 20, and Jessica Escalante 18. Talitha Draper came off the bench to record 14 points and eight rebounds.
Dos Pueblos’ press defense allowed the Chargers to jump out to a 17-0 lead at the start.
“Chiara and Jessica at the top of the press is working very well,” Hicks said.
The trio of DiMarco, Escalante and Mata collected 19 steals.
Dos Pueblos (2-0) moves on to face Villanova on Friday in Lompoc.
