Chaminade's Mi'Chael Wright calls for the ball in the second half

The second half of the Gold Coast Tournament’s championship game was a one-sided affair and it didn’t go well for the Chargers.

Dos Pueblos’ girls basketball team stalled out in the final two quarters, leaving the Gold Coast title to Chaminade in a 62-49 victory for the Eagles.

Chaminade’s trapping defense picked up its speed and intensity and the Chargers felt the heat. DP had earned a 35-30 lead at halftime but could only score 14 points in the second half.

Mi’Chael Wright recorded a game-high 22 points for Chaminade, 14 of which came after halftime. Robyn Brown added 17 and Annie Tarakchian had 10.

“(Mi’Chael) did awesome,” said Eagles head coach Kelli Dimuro. “She came back from kind of a hard game yesterday – you know, hard for her; she couldn’t post, she couldn’t make a shot and today she was really on fire.”

Chiara DiMarco led Dos Pueblos with 15 and Jessica Escalante posted 13. The Chargers’ two guards were almost completely neutralized in the second half, however, as the two managed only one basket each.

“”That’s what we did in the second half. We did a good job of stopping them from penetrating,” Dimuro said

DP’s six game win streak was snapped. In those six games, the Chargers (6-2) won by an average of 29.5 points.

“We wore down I think. They’re a good team; that’s by far the best team we’ve played all year,” said Chargers head coach Jelani Hicks.

Dos Pueblos’ next game is on Tuesday at Atascadero.
