Despite trailing for the first time this season, Bishop Diego’s girls soccer team came out on top again on Friday, posting a 2-1 result over Village Christian.
The Cardinals fell behind in the 17th minute and trailed 1-0 through halftime. Elisa Bernardi changed Bishop’s fortunes in the 51st minute with its first goal of the day off an assist from Gabby Koepenick.
Annalise Morando knocked home the game-winner in the 74th minute on a header off a corner kick from Hannah Brand.
“It was a tough match; I was very proud of girls today about keeping their poise,” said Bishop Diego head coach Brent Gonsalves.
The Cardinals are off to a 5-0 start to their season, which is the best start in Gonsalves’ five years as coach at Bishop. He said it might be the Cardinals’ best start in school history.
“It’s great to be undefeated but we’re still a work in progress,” Gonsalves said.
The Cardinals head into the final day of the Grace Brethren Tournament on Saturday. Bishop is in the semifinals where Sierra Canyon awaits. The semifinal game starts at 11:30 a.m. at Grace Brethren followed by the championship or third-place game at 3 p.m.
