Cardinals finally stopped at Grace Brethren tourney

Bishop Diego’s undefeated start of the season finally ended on Saturday at the Grace Brethren Tournament with a loss to Sierra Canyon.

The Cardinals (5-1-1) went on to tie Grace Brethren in the third-place game but finished in fourth place after a shootout.

I thought we played great in this tournament, it’s the highest we’ve ever finished,” said Cardinals head coach Brent Gonsalves.

Sierra Canyon, a defending CIF-ss champion, beat Bishop 3-1 in the Cardinals’ first game of the day. Sierra Canyon took a 3-0 lead before Lauren Underwood scored in the second half for Bishop.

In the second game, Natalie Durtche recorded a goal and an assist on a Elisa Bernardi score. But Grace Brethren drew even each time the Cardinals went up, and then took the shutout.
