Six 3-pointers by Cal before a miss wasn’t a good thing for UCSB’s men’s basketball team on Monday night as the Bears jumped out to a big first-half lead on their way to a 70-50 victory.
The Bears made their first 11 of 16 3-point attempts and held UCSB to a season-low 50 points of offense on the other end.
James Nunnally’s 10 points led UCSB, while Orlando Johnson’s nine points on 4-of-13 shooting was another season-low.
“There really is nothing good to take from this game,” said Gaucho head coach Bob Williams. “I have to give them credit, they did a lot of things well, but we did a lot of things bad. We have a very long way to go.”
The loss drops the Gauchos to 1-2 on the current 4-game road trip which ends on Thursday at BYU. Overall, the Gauchos are 5-4.
Allen Crabbe did much of the damage from beyond the arc, connecting on five 3-pointers for Cal. Crabbe posted 19 points.
Justin Cobb led all scorers with 25, which was a career-high for the sophomore from Los Angeles.
The Bears, now 11-2 on the season, have won six of their last seven games with their only loss being a one-point setback to San Diego State.
UCSB made a push to begin the second half. The Gauchos trailed 37-23 at halftime but cut the lead to eight at 43-35.
That’s when Cal took off on a 16-0 run that effectively ended the game.
