John-Joe Slater curved in a 25-yard shot in the 51st minute Tuesday afternoon, lifting SBCC to a 1-0 men’s soccer win over Canyons in Santa Clarita. It was the first goal of the year for Slater, a sophomore midfielder from England.
“We dominated the first half (outshooting the Cougars 6-0),” said coach John Sisterson. “Duran Stanley had a number of chances and Arman (Salimpour) had one headed off the goal line by a defender.”
The Vaqueros, ranked No. 10 in the state, outshot the third-place Cougars 17-5. SBCC stayed unbeaten on the road (7-0-2) while improving to 12-1-4 overall and 9-1-1 in the WSC. Canyons fell to 4-4-3 in conference.
The Vaqueros, 41-4-8 in WSC action the last four years, remained one point behind Oxnard in the race for the conference title.
SBCC will host Moorpark on Friday at 2 p.m.
