Rodrigo Perez poked in a pair of headers in a five-minute stretch of the second half Wednesday afternoon and SBCC went on to blank Moorpark 4-0 in a WSC men’s soccer match at La Playa Stadium.
Arman Salimpour and Duran Stanley also scored for the Vaqueros, ranked No. 7 in the state and 10th in the nation. The Vaqueros (13-1-4, 10-1-1) took over first place in the WSC, one point ahead of Oxnard, which tied Hancock on Friday.
It was the fifth straight win for the Vaqueros, who are 9-0-1 in their last 10. They’re also 6-1-2 at home this season.
Roberto Santana and Ricardo Vazquez were solid in the back as goalie Yonha Adrabi notched his fourth shutout of the year and 16th of his career.
On a windy day, SBCC outshot the Raiders (2-8-2) by a wide margin (11-2) in the each half.
In the 56th minute, Nick Littleton’s free kick went to Stanley on the left side of the box and he made a short head pass to Perez, who headed it past the keeper. Five minutes later, Perez headed one in from 12 yards out on a 33-yard free kick by Littleton.
“We had to step it up and we really executed in the second half,” said Perez, a former Dos Pueblos High standout. “When Duran goes in the air, I know it might come to me, so I try to look for the second ball. Luckily the keeper was out of place.”
Perez set up Arman Salimpour for another header in the 78th minute and Stanley completed the scoring in the 83rd with a rocket shot on a 21-yard free kick.
“We just couldn’t get settled with the wind at our backs,” said coach John Sisterson. “We did a lot better in the second half. All the goals were good today.”
The Vaqueros play L.A. Mission on Tuesday afternoon at L.A. Pierce in Woodland Hills.
