SBCC went cold in the final 7:40 on Saturday and fell to Victor Valley 76-57 in the third-place game of the Glendale Tip-Off men’s basketball tournament.
The Vaqueros (0-2) were trailing 61-54 with 7:40 to go before missing their next eight field goals and six straight free throws. They were outscored 15-0 until Milan Pfeisinger hit a 3-pointer with three seconds to play.
“We played well in the first half (when they made 17-20 free throws) but we had that long cold spell that included a couple of front ends of 1-and-1s,“ said coach Morris Hodges.
SBCC shot 27.4 percent for the game (17-62) and was outrebounded 55-39. They converted just 3-of-14 free throws in the second half.
Anthony Williams paced the Vaqueros with 13 points and six rebounds while J.P. Dodson had 12 points and four boards. Kenny Thomas grabbed six rebounds.
“We’re not a big team and we knew rebounding would be a factor but it’s really plagued us in the first two games,” Hodges said.
The Vaqueros open play in the San Bernardino Valley Tournament on Thursday with a 4 p.m. game against Compton.
