Bishop Diego defeated Twentynine Palms 21-14 Friday night in a CIF East Valley Division quarterfinal football game.
The fourth-seeded Cardinals improve to 11-1 and advance to next week’s semifinals where they will play the Division’s top ranked team in Sierra Canyon (12-0), who defeated Ontario Christian 38-0.
Bishop took a 19-0 lead at halftime and held that lead until late in the third quarter when Twentynine Palms’ Chris Fui Fui rushed in for his 15th touchdown of the season on a goal line play. The Wildcats scored again late in the fourth quarter but Bishop was able to recover the onsides kick with less than a minute on the clock.
Nolan Tisdale found Reece Moulton for a touchdown reception on a crazy play for Bishop’s first score, followed by a rushing touchdown by Brandon Gonzalez a few minutes before halftime. Justin Brosnan kicked a pair of first-half field goals.
Bishop Diego’s semifinal apearance is their best playoff run since 2007, when they lost to Notre Dame’s Cierre Wood and Santa Clara in the CIF Mid-Valley Division championship game.
On the other side of this year’s East Valley bracket, Rim of the World defeated St. Margaret’s 23-13 and Paraclete roughed up Aquinas 42-7.
