The Bishop Diego girls volleyball team defeated St. Bonaventure in a thrilling five-set match to clinch third place in the Tri-Valley League as several players recorded eye-popping.
St. Bonaventure started on top and won the first set 25-22. The Cardinals responded and won the next game 25-23, but lost 25-20 in the third set. Facing the end of its season, Bishop Diego rallied and won the final two sets 27-25 and 15-13, despite being down late in the fourth game and early in the fifth.
Outside hitters Lauren Underwood and Diana Sleep were active on both offense and defense. Underwood finished with 25 kills and 19 digs while Sleep had 22 kills and 20 digs.
But Nicole Tetherow put up the most astounding statistic of the night, finishing the match with 65 assists.
“Her leadership and her competitiveness on top of her volleyball skills really helped propel us,” head coach Jason Donnelly said.
The victory earned the Cardinals a spot in the Division II AA playoffs, and they will receive their draw this weekend.
