With 14 returners back, Bishop Diego’s girls soccer team put the right foot out front on Tuesday, beating back Nordhoff 2-0 in the Cardinals’ season opener.
Elisa Bernardi scored in the first half and Gabby Koepenick made it 2-0 for Bishop in the second half.
“We’re looking pretty good this year,” said Brent Gonsalves, who beat the Rangers for the first time during his time as Bishop’s head coach. “We scheduled Nordhoff because we knew we were getting a tough game.”
Annalise Morando set up Bernardi’s goal to get the credit for an assist while Koepenick scored unassisted.
“She did a great job of dribbling around three players (to get her shot),” explained Gonsalves.
Senior Kim Ruiz made 3 saves in the shutout.
“I thought our defense did a great job today preventing them from having dangerous opportunities,” Gonsalves said.
Bishop Diego (1-0) hosts Dunn on Friday and travels to Thacher on Saturday.
