Sophomore Sophia Yamauchi has been named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Female Athlete of the Week after posting three individual wins in last Saturday’s double dual meet against UCLA and Oregon State.
Yamauchi won the 100 breast (1:03.51) by 2.48 seconds; won the 200 breast (2:16.63) by 5.40 seconds; and won the 200 individual medley (2:02.69) by 2.75 seconds. She also swam in the Gaucho 200 medley relay, which took third behind two UCLA teams with a time of 1:46.97. She swam her breaststroke leg in an unofficial split of 29.00 seconds.
Yamauchi’s wins helped lead the Gauchos past Oregon State and helped UCSB post its most individual wins (8) over UCLA in program history. She is now ranked in the top-20 in Division I in each of the events: fifth in the 200 IM, 13th in the 200 breast, and 18th in the 100 breast.
This marks Yamauchi’s third MPSF Athlete of the Week honor, she earned the accolade twice during her freshman campaign.
The Gauchos will be back in action on Friday when the men and women host Denver in a 12 p.m. meet at Campus Pool. Admission, as always, is free.
