Westmont wins a thriller in double overtime

Westmont made the most of its only corner kick of the match.

Doug Harrell scored off the set piece at 54 seconds into the second overtime to lift the Warriors to a wild 4-3 win over visiting Biola in a GSAC soccer match at Thorrington Field.

The goal was a huge relief for the Warriors, who gave up a 3-1 lead in the last six minutes against an undermanned Biola squad. Alex Kincade of the Eagles received a red card in the 70th minute. The referee also ejected an assistant coach from the bench.

Biola’s Cody Shelton scored an unassisted goal in the 84th minute and converted a penalty kick after a handball called against Westmont with 47 seconds left in regulation, sending the match into overtime.

Goalkeeper Matthew McNab, looking into the sun, came up with a couple of big saves in the first overtime.

Westmont’s Sebastian Kent opened the scoring, heading in a cross from Zach George in the 18th minute.

The 1-0 lead held until the 64th minute. Julio Cuevas scored on a rebound of a shot off the post by Zach Bautista to tie the score with a man down.

Westmont then went on a flurry. Harrell received a pass from Will Bobo deep in the box and shot past goalkeeper Aaron Fenlason to put the Warriors up 2-1 in the 66th minute

The struck again three minutes later,  capitalizing on the man advantage. Nana Akyen got free in the box and scored off a pass from Jordan Correa for a 3-1 lead. It was Akyen’s first goal of the season.

Biola regained the momentum and scored twice to even the score before Harrell’s heroics in the second overtime.  The game winner was the result of a hustle play by George, who drove down the left side of the field battling a defender and succeeded in earning a corner kick. George kicked the ball short to  Akyen who served it to the far post, where Harrell rushed in and headed the ball toward the goal. Biola’s keeper got a hand on the ball, but it spun into the net to give the Warriors the win.

Westmont is 3-8-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the GSAC, while Biola falls to 7-5-2, 2-4
