Madison Serrano tallied 16 kills and Tessa Martin added another 14 as Westmont Volleyball handed The Master’s a 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 26-24, 25-19) Golden State Athletic Conference loss in Santa Clarita on Tuesday evening. With the win, Westmont improved to 7-12 overall and 5-6 in GSAC play. The Master’s fell to 16-10 overall and 4-7 in the conference standings.
“It seems like the team got better as the match progressed,” said Westmont head coach Patti Cook. “They were students of the game. They observed what their opponents were doing and made the necessary adjustments.”
“It was a good team win,” continued Cook. “The team on the bench did a great job of scouting out what The Master’s was doing and communicating that to the team on the court. I’m proud of their execution of the game plan.”
After losing the first set 25-19, The Mustangs battled back to claim a 27-25 win in set number two. Westmont responded, however, by claiming the third set 26-24 and then cruising to a 25-19 win in set four.
“One of our season’s goals was to have an upset on the road,” said Cook, “and we accomplished that. Kristin Schroeder dug a lot of hard-to-dig balls. She was extremely dynamic in the back row. Kayta (Goyich) had a good game on the right side, using her powerful arm and doing a great job of reading the hitter on the other side of the net. Her blocking improved a lot this game. Alexandria (Wilson) did a great job of observing what was happening on The Master’s side of the net and adjusting her block accordingly.”
