Rodrigo Perez staked SBCC to a 2-1 lead with a pair of first-half goals on Tuesday and the Vaqueros went on to beat Hancock 4-2 in a WSC men’s soccer match at Santa Maria. Roberto Santana assisted on Perez’s first goal, which tied the score at 1 in the 22nd minute. Juan Diaz Casallas assisted in the 37th minute and the Vaqueros took a 2-1 halftime lead.
SBCC, ranked 12th in the nation, improved to 5-1-3 overall and 2-1-0 in the WSC. Hancock fell to 4-5-1 and 1-1-1.
Jordan Tabor converted a free kick from 25 yards in the 70th minute after Duran Stanley was fouled. It was the fourth goal in five games for Tabor.
Hancock cut the deficit to 3-2 in the 80th minute before Peter Aguilar tapped in SBCC’s fourth goal from close range in the 88th minute. Perez got the assist with his signature flip throw-in.
“It was a workmanlike performance,” said coach John Sisterson. “It was a game where we had to go up there and get a result and get the three points. We were happy to do that.
“We took our goals well and could have had a couple more. We’ve really got to tighten up (on defense) on these small, grass fields away from home.”
The Vaqueros host unbeaten Canyons (4-0-4, 2-0-1) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. game.
