Public can try out San Marcos’ new track at Royal Races

San Marcos wants to celebrate its new all-weather track with a community mini-track meet and 5-kilometer run.

The first Royal Races is scheduled for Saturday, Oct.15  at Warkentin Stadium.

The festivities kick off at 10 a.m. with a 5-k run that will take runners through and around campus. Track events will follow. Entrants can compete in the 50- and 100-meter dashes, the 400, 800, mile, 100 hurdles, long jump and high jump. There also will be a 4×200 relay.

All registration will be done on Saturday morning. A fee of $25 includes entry to unlimited events, a T-shirt and lunch.

The events are for all ages.

“We really encourage people to come out,” said track coach Marilyn Hantgin. “There are so many former athletes in town. We welcome them to come back to San Marcos, run a race and just hang out.”

The event is a fundraiser for the Royals cross country and track teams.
