Jerry Pimm, the coach responsible for elevating UCSB men’s basketball on the national scene, will be honored as a Legend of the Dome on Nov. 30, when the Gauchos play host to UNLV at the Thunderdome.
Mark Massari, director of athletics at UCSB, announced Pimm and former women’s basketball star Erin Alexander as the Legends of the Dome for the 2011-12 basketball season at a Gaucho Basketball Media Day.
Pimm, the school’s all-time winningest coach with 222 victories, was in attendance at the media day at the Cabrillo Arts Center.
He admitted he was at first reluctant to accept the honor, saying it should be only for the players. But he gave in and called it “a tremendous honor.”
Pimm thanked his players, coaching staff, trainers and UCSB administrators, singling out former vice chancellor Ed Birch: “The guy who hired me and the guy who got it started, in my era, anyway.”
A date hasn’t been finalized for Alexander’s special night. The former Santa Ynez High star won Big West Conference Player of the Year honors in 1997 and was inducted into the Gaucho Hall of Fame in 2008.
