With a share of first place on the line, Santa Barbara’s players rose to the occasion and beat Dos Pueblos 233-248 in a Channel League girls golf showdown at Montecito Country Club on Wednesday.
Isabella Doub earned medalist honors with a 2-over par 38 to help the Dons defend their home course and pull into a first-place tie in the standings with Dos Pueblos at 5-1
“They realized this was for a share of the Channel League title,” Santa Barbara coach Ryan Throop said. “(DP) beat us at their place, so (my players) thought they could win on their home course, and they played really well today.
“This is one of our lowest scores at Montecito,” he added. “They came through. All the girls played really well.”
Saralisa Ortega shot a 44 and Olivia Fanaro a 48 to help Santa Barbara (11-4 overall).
DP was led by Vanesa Villa’s 43. Bekah Beveridge shot a 49.
“DP is a very good team; they’ve won Channel League quite few years in a row,” Throop said. “To have a chance to beat them doesn’t happen every day.
“(DP coach) Rob Schiff said it best: ‘To be the outright champ, you have to play well at the other team’s course.’ ”
