Bishop Diego’s Charlie Dentzel and the Carpinteria boys made it two in row, capturing the second Frontier League cross country meet at the Carpinteria Bluffs on a hot Wednesday afternoon.
Carpinteria, placing three runners in the top five, scored 25 points. Bishop Diego edged Malibu for second, 58-59.
David Cornejo was Carpinteria’s top finisher, taking third in 18:50. Lalo Garcia was fourth in 18:51 and Adam Ughoc placed fifth in 18:55.
Dentzel covered the 3-mile course in 18:30. Two other Bishop finished in the top 10: Matt Grimes in eighth in 20:30 and Matt Hammond in 10th in 20:41.
Coach Ray Vasquez said the work of his assistant coach, Rob Beamer, has helped the runners improve.
Melissa Tovar led Carpinteria to the girls team title. She won the race in 22:56. Kelsey Drain finished third in 23:10 and Leticia Cruz was fourth in 23:12. The Warriors scored 23 points to far outdistance second-place Malibu with 44.
Christy Delgadillo was Bishop’s top runner, finishing in eighth place.
