Freshman Christine Adams scored two goals, both assisted by Ashley Correa, to help No. 18 Westmont record a 3-1 Golden State Athletic Conference win over host Fresno Pacific on Wednesday night.
With the win, Westmont (10-5, 5-3 GSAC) moves into fourth place in the GSAC standings. Fresno Pacific falls to 6-7, 2-6.
“Our players did a great job and played well with a lot of energy and fight,” said Westmont head coach Kristi Kiely. “I give Fresno Pacific a lot of credit. They are a very good team and will be a force in the playoffs. Our players are coming off a frustrating week and they were ready and waiting to perform. They just did that.”
Westmont’s first goal came in the third minute and the second in the 37th.
“The two goals were very similar,” described Kiely. “Ashley found the ball down the left sideline, played beautiful balls into the box on the ground. Christine had two clinical, classic finishes on the ground, side netting, far post.”
Just a minute and one-half after going up 2-0, the Warriors were awarded a penalty kick.
“Sam worked very hard to draw the foul,” noted Kiely. “On a ball that was sent through, the (Fresno Pacific) keeper came out. Sam got there a touch early and forced the keeper to foul her to keep her from scoring.”
The whistle blew and Westmont was awarded a penalty kick.
Alison Hensley successfully converted the kick to give Westmont a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
