Westmont Women’s Volleyball opened the Golden State Athletic Conference season on Friday night with a 3-1 loss at #5 Point Loma Nazarene (25-14, 26-24, 21-25, 25-23). Tessa Martin led the Warriors with 14 kills. Marie Trudelle added nine kills without committing an error to record a .600 attack percentage. Madison Serrano also contributed nine kills to the Warrior cause.
The Warriors fell behind quickly in the first set as Point Loma rocketed out of the gate to an 11-5 start. The second set, however, was a different story. Westmont took a 4-1 lead fueled by a kill from Serrano, two by Martin and a service ace by Ciara Turner.
The Sea Lions battled back to tie the game at seven-all, but Westmont turned the table to go up 21-16. However, the Warriors could not hold on as the Sea Lions won 10 of the next 13 serves to claim the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
As in the second set, Westmont jumped out to an early lead, taking an 8-3 advantage in the third set. Point Loma scored the next four points to pull within one, but Westmont responded with a seven-point run to take control of the set.
The fourth set remained close throughout until Point Loma put up a 4-1 run to take a 20-17 lead. Westmont battled back to within one at 24-23, but fell one point short of extending the set.
The Warriors continue their San Diego County road trip tomorrow with a three o’clock game against San Diego Christian.
