Westmont battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the first half but then gave up two more goals in the second half and lost to Cal State San Marcos, 4-2, in the final game of the Heritage Club Classic on Monday at Thorrington Field.
It was the fourth straight loss to start the season for the Warriors, their worst start in 30 years.
“It is new territory for a lot of us,” said Westmont coach Dave Wolf. “It is a hard and humbling place to be. The players are experiencing something right now that very few of them have ever experienced. ”
Gustavo Hernandez converted a penalty kick in the 21st minute and Nana Ayken tied the score for the Warriors in the 33rd minute off a Doug Harrell assist.
Cal State San Marcos (1-3) regained the upper hand in the second half when Eric Lopez dribbled through the defense and beat goalkeeper Matthew McNab for a 3-2 lead.
Tobin Sullivan made it 4-2 for the Cougars, scoring unassisted from 24 yards out in the 84th minute.
San Marcos jumped on Westmont for a goal in the first minute of the game as Scott Rice scored off a rebound. Rice scored again in the 15th minute, heading in a service from Jake Kaiser.
