Katie Voss scored from close range in the 82nd minute on Thursday, lifting SBCC past Cypress 2-1 in the BK Invitational women’s soccer tournament at Ventura College.
Cypress went 18-1-4 last year and was ranked No. 12 in the nation in the NSCAA preseason poll. Both teams were rated in the top eight in the state in 2010.
After a scoreless first half, Sylvia Ibarra put the Vaqueros (2-0) on the board on an assist from Voss. Cypress tied it in the 72nd minute and Voss scored the game-winner 10 minutes later on a flick pass from Jessica Domenichelli.
It was the fourth goal of the year for Voss, who has 11 points in two games.
“This is a great win for our program,” said coach John Sisterson. “We had to change our style of play due to a smaller, natural-grass field. And the fact that we had just played a game two days earlier in 106-degree heat.”
SBCC will take on Orange Coast on Friday at Ventura with kickoff set for 3 p.m.
