The UCSB women’s soccer team lost a 4-1 decision at Michigan State on Sunday afternoon.
The Gauchos (3-4-0), who beat Oakland University 2-0 on Friday night, couldn’t pull the double against the Spartans (6-1-0).
Michigan State got on the board first when Hannah Peterson scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Laura Heyboer at 23:18. Peterson’s goal came on a shot from the top left corner of the box.
UCSB tied the score less than seven minutes later. In the 30th minute, freshman forward Indiana Mead collected a cross from senior defender Kathleen Matthew and blasted a shot past Spartan goalkeeper Courtney Clem from about 15 yards out. The goal was the first of Mead’s career.
Michigan State regained the lead with 4:16 remaining in the first half. Heyboer took the ball up the right side, eluded the defender and fed Olivia Stander, whose shot from 16 yards found its mark.
The Spartans extended their lead in the 60th minute. Hannah Peterson and Stander connected to get the ball to Heyboer in the box, and her shot found the back of the net for her eighth goal of the season. Stander contributed her second of the day in the 71st minute, putting in a rebound of a Paige Wester shot that ricocheted off the left post.
The Gauchos were outshot 14-6 overall and 6-3 in shots on goal. Dyanne Anderson had two of their shots. Goalkeeper Makenna Henry had two saves for UCSB.
