Sophomore Marie Trudelle and freshman Madison Serrano contributed 12 kills each to Westmont Volleyball’s three-game sweep of the Hawks of San Diego Christian (25-23, 25-20, 25-17). With the win, Westmont improves to 3-7 overall and 1-1 in Golden State Athletic Conference play. San Diego Christian falls to 5-11 overall and 0-2 in the GSAC.
With Heidi Thompson serving to start the match, Westmont jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first set. The Hawks battled back to tie the set at 8-8 and kept it close the rest of the distance. Up 21-20, Trudelle produced a kill to give the Warriors a two-point advantage and the serve. Serrano then matched Trudelle’s effort to put Westmont on top 23-20.
San Diego Christian claimed a point back on a kill by Aja Walker, but a Hawks’ attack error gave Westmont a 24-21 lead. After two Warrior errors made the game 24-23, Serrano delivered a kill on a set from Thompson to give the Warriors the win.
In the second set, the Warriors used a 5-0 run in the middle of the set to take control. Up 10-9, Trudelle delivered another kill and then went back to serve. Ciara Turner connected for one of her four kills to continue the run before Trudelle served an ace. Two errors by San Diego Christian concluded the run from which the Hawks never recovered.
The third set found the scored close throughout the early and middle part of the set. With the Warriors up 18-17, Serrano connected on an attack to give the Warriors a two-point lead and the serve. Once again the serve was in the hands of Trudelle. This time she would serve for six straight points, putting an end to the set and the match.
Altogether, Trudelle served 17 times, recording two aces without making an error.
The Warriors return to action on Tuesday night when they host The Master’s (12-4, 0-1 GSAC) at seven o’clock in Murchison Gymnasium.
