SAN DIEGO – Sophomore Erica Shelton pounded home a penalty kick in the 54th minute and the UC Santa Barbara women’s soccer team held on for its second straight win, 1-0 at San Diego State.
The Gauchos (5-5-1) are on their first two-game winning streak of the 2011 season.
With the game scoreless, Santa Barbara was awarded a penalty kick at the 53:58 mark when midfielder Sophie Metz fouled Gaucho midfielder Katy Roby in the penalty area. Shelton converted the PK for her first goal of the season.
While UCSB outshot Nevada 28-1 on Sunday, it was not nearly as dominant against San Diego State. The Aztecs, coached by former Gaucho assistant coach Mike Friesen, had 10 shots in the second half alone. They also had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks, but the Gauchos’ defense, led by sophomore goalkeeper Makenna Henry, who notched four saves, was up to the task.
The Gauchos travel to Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday to take-on the Roadrunners at 5:00 p.m., before opening Big West play at home on Friday, Sept. 30 against Long Beach State.
