Sami Hill and Kiley Neushul are back on the same team again. The former Dos Pueblos water polo teammates are playing for the U.S. Junior National team at the FINA Water Polo Junior World Championships in Trieste, Italy.

In the U.S. opener against host Italy, Hill, the goalkeeper, swatted down numerous shots in an impressive 11-4 victory.

Neushul won the initial sprint and scored from seven meters on the first U.S. possession to set the tone in a game where the Americans dominated offensively. She finished with two goals.

Kiley Neushul has six goals in two games for the U.S.

In their second game, the U.S. pummeled Indonesia 31-0. Neushul scored four goals.

The high score was necessary in order for the Americans to maintain a close goal differential in the group with Greece, who beat Indonesia 37-2. Both teams have advanced to the knockout phase.

At DP, Neushul played on four straight CIF championship teams. Hill was the goalkeeper on three of them.

Hill is entering her sophomore year at UCLA while Neushul is beginning her college career at Stanford.

The two were members of the U.S. Junior team that won a bronze medal at the last World Championships in Siberia in 2009.

Dylan Axelrod is scheduled to make his first major league start for the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers.

Axelrod, a former Santa Barbara High and SBCC standout, was called up from Triple-A Charlotte by the White Sox last week and pitched two innings of scoreless relief against the Minnesota Twins.

The right-hander is replacing Jake Peavy in the rotation after Peavy was shut down for the rest of the year.

Former Santa Barbara High and SBCC standout quarterback John Uribe threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns in Lindenwood University’s 67-10 thrashing of Graceland in its home opener on Saturday. The Lions are 2-0. Here’s a video with some postgame comments from Uribe.

Former Dos Pueblos volleyball star Carly Wopat was selected as the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week.

Wopat, a middle blocker, anchored the Stanford defense at the Nike Volleyball Big Four Classic, earning all-tournament honors. Her efforts helped the team post its second-straight undefeated non-conference season (6-0), averaging 1.44 blocks and 1.56 digs to go with 2.67 kills and 3.56 points per set in the two matches.

Against Penn State, Wopat tallied a team-high seven blocks, eight digs and 11 kills. In the tournament championship against Florida, she recorded six blocks, six digs and put down 13 kills.

Wopat’s teammate and fellow sophomore Rachel Williams was the Offensive Player of the Week.

Sammie Brown, who played with Wopat on DP’s CIF championship team in 2008, became the 11th player in Notre Dame history to record at least 1,000 assist in a career, reaching the milestone with a 32-assist performance against Portland on Saturday. Brown is only a sophomore.

Notre Dame senior Kristen Dealy is five kills away from joining the 1,000-1,000 club. She goes into the weekend with 995 kills and 1,042 assists. The last Irish player to reach the milestone is Adrianna Stasiuk in 2007.

Karina Evans, another member of the DP championship team, led Delaware to its first home win of the season. She had seven block assists and hit a team-high .583 with seven kills in a 25-17, 25-11, 25-12 victory over Temple on Tuesday.

“I thought our blocking was really good,” head coach Bonnie Kenny said. “Chelsea (Lawrence) and Karina really opened up our outside attack. That’s something we haven’t had all year. Neither one of them had a hitting error. I was proud of the way we incorporated our middle attack, and that can only help us out in the long run.”
