Freshman forward Mallory Mitchell scored her third goal in the last two games to help secure a 2-0 win by the Westmont women’s soccer team over Rocky Mountain of Montana on Monday morning at Thorrington Field. It was the second shutout in as many days for the Warriors who improved to 2-1 on the season. Rocky Mountain fell to 1-4.
“That is what we brought her in to do and she has been successful,” said Westmont head coach Kristi Kielly of Mitchell’s performance. “She is a very composed, calm, accurate player. She has done well for us whether it has been starting or coming off the bench.”
Mitchell’s two goals against William Jessup on Saturday not only earned her a starting role in today’s game against the Battlin’ Bears, but also earned her recognition as the Golden State Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
“Good for her. She should be,” said Kiely about the award. “She has done very well this weekend and I am really glad to have another (Westmont) player getting those awards and acclamations.”
After a scoreless first half, an own goal gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead just a minute and one-half into the second period. Taking aim from the left-hand corner, Ashley Correa blasted a shot across the front of the goal which struck a Rocky Mountain defender and deflected into the net.
Mitchell’s goal sealed the victory in the 85th minute of play. Nicole Yankey passed the ball from the center of the field to Mitchell on the right. Mitchell launched a shot from 20 yards out that sailed over everyone’s head and landed in the net.
“It definitely felt like a good win,” said Kiely. “At some moments we had to weather the storm. To come away with a win is obviously exciting. It is great to see the team’s character and great to see how resilient we are.”
Recording her second shutout of the young season was sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Smith, who produced four saves
“It is so nice to have Lindsey,” said Kiely. “I think she has had a fantastic season so far. She came up big for us today. I think the best way to put it is how comfortable we feel. I don’t tense up every time there is a shot because I am very confident in her abilities.”
The Warriors will next take on NCAA Division II opponent McKendree (Ill.) who is sporting a 1-1 record. The game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. kick-off on Saturday, September 10.
