SAN JOSE — Behind double-doubles from Leah Sully and Kara Sherrard, the UCSB women’s volleyball team won the Santa Clara Tournament on Saturday night by defeating San Jose State 22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-18.
The win capped off a three-match sweep of the weekend’s foes for a tournament victory and the Gauchos are now riding a four-match winning streak. UCSB improves to 5-4 on the season.
Sully had 16 kills to go along with 15 digs for the Gauchos while Sherrard notched 13 kills and 12 digs.
Senior Stacey Schmidt added 13 kills and hit .393 on the evening.
UCSB continued its stellar defensive play, tallying 9.0 total team blocks and had 71 digs against the Spartans (2-6). The Gauchos held San Jose State to just a .165 hitting percentage.
Lily Lopez and Jenna Wilson each tallied a solo block and Chelsey Lowe chipped in with 14 digs.
Freshman setter Hanna Nielson added 40 assists and eight digs for the Gauchos.
UCSB continues its non-conference tournament schedule when it travels to San Diego for three matches next weekend. The Gauchos do not have a home match until Sept. 30 when they host Pacific at 7 p.m.
