Ex-SBCC pitcher Axelrod joins White Sox

Dylan Axelrod, who pitched at SBCC in 2004-05, was called up by the Chicago White Sox on Monday. The White Sox purchased the contract of the right-hander before the second game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins. He’s expected to pitch out of the bullpen and when he does, it will be his Major League debut.

The former Santa Barbara High hurler set SBCC’s single-season strikeout record with 117 in 2005.

Axelrod was a combined 9-3 with a 2.69 ERA in 150 2/3 innings in the White Sox’s minor-league system this season. He had 132 strikeouts and 35 walks. At Triple-A Charlotte he was 6-1 with a 2.27 ERA in 15 outings.

The 26-year-old Axelrod entered the 2011 season ranked by Baseball America as having the best control in the White Sox’s minor-league system. He helped UC Irvine to a spot in the College World Series in 2007.

He was signed as a free agent in August of 2009 out of the independent Frontier League, shortly after he had been released by the San Diego Padres.
