Dos Pueblos finished strong at the Archbishop Mitty girls volleyball tournament in San Jose on Saturday, knocking off the No. 5 and No. 4 teams in the Max Preps national rankings to finish in fifth place.
The Chargers, ranked No. 2 in CIF-SS Division 1-AA, started the day by roaring back to beat Cardinal Gibbons of North Carolina in five games, 21-25, 22-25, 26-25, 27-25, 29-27 (in a 15-point game). They followed that huge win with a four-game victory over top-seeded Palo Alto, 27-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-21.
“We had a fun weekend. We learned we can play with the best,” DP coach Todd Garrett said. “We also learned we have a lot of work to do and can lose to anyone if we are not putting out our best effort, playing smart, and playing as a team.”
The Chargers opened the tournament on Friday with a sweep of Millard North (25-21, 25-11, 25-20) and then fell to sixth-seeded Saint Francis in four games (25-17, 25-15, 22-25, 25-20).
Garrett said his players are fired to get better.
“We are excited to get back in the gym on Monday and work hard to keep improving,” he said.
Following the tournament, the Chargers headed to Stanford to watch the Cardinal play Colorado in a Pac-12 match. DP alums Carly and Sam Wopat play at Stanford and Nicki Brown plays for Colorado.
