The Dos Pueblos High football team kept its season opener close through the first half, but was worn down by the Righetti running game and lost 27-7 in Santa Maria on Friday night.
The game started as a defensive battle and the first quarter ended in a 0-0 stalemate. Righetti scored first early in the second quarter, but the Chargers immediately responded. On the ensuing drive, Dos Pueblos quarterback Armando Arzate completed a long completion to wideout Jake Roberts to keep the drive alive. Soon after, Josh Bartley caught a 16-yard pass to get down to the Righetti seven-yard line. Bartley, the reigning Channel League MVP, then scored on a handoff from seven yards out.
After the half, Righetti’s size-advantage on the offensive line took its toll on the Chargers’ defense. Righetti conducted two methodical scoring drives in the third quarter, and safety Josh Garza sealed the game with an interception return for a touchdown in the fourth.
Dos Pueblos, the defending Channel League champion, will continue its season at home next Friday night against San Luis Obispo High.
