Jessica Domenichelli continued her hot streak and SBCC used three second-half goals to defeat Hancock 3-0 on Friday in a WSC women’s soccer match at La Playa Stadium.
The Vaqueros, ranked fourth in the state and fifth in the nation, improved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in conference. They outshot the visitors from Santa Maria 31-4, including 19-3 in the second half.
Domenichelli found the net in the 59th and 79th minutes after a scoreless first half. Katie Voss set up the first goal with a nice lob pass that pulled out the keeper and allowed Domenichelli to head it past the goalie, who was about 12 yards from the goal line.
Ali Raack assisted on the second goal, which came after Domenichelli split two defenders and drove it into the left side of the net. In the 82nd minute, Voss made a long run up the left side and drilled a shot off the keeper for the final goal.
“We know we’re a second-half team and we just kept hacking away at it,” said Voss, a sophomore midfielder. “Everybody has confidence in Jess. We know she’s going to score and she knows she’s going to score.”
Domenichelli nearly had a hat trick but her shot in the 84th minute caromed off the crossbar. She has five goals and three assists in the last three games.
“One of the problems today was the wind,” said SBCC coach John Sisterson. “It’s difficult for teams to play with a strong wind. In the second half, we told them to get the ball down. Typically, we play better against the wind and that’s what we did in the second half.
“Courtney Allard and Sara Tomas did a great job in the midfield.”
The Vaqueros will host Cuesta on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
