The Cal Poly men’s and women’s cross country teams defeated UCSB in the annual Lagoon Open and dual meet on Saturday morning at UCSB.
The Mustangs defeated the Gauchos in the 5K women’s race by a score of 25-30. Cal Poly’s Vanessa Hancock was the highest finisher from the two teams, running the course in 17:22.1. She actually finished second in the race to former UCSB star Breanne Strenkowski.
UCSB’s Andrea Jacobs finished fourth overall and second in the dual meet competition in a time of 17:29.5. Cal Poly runners also finished fourth, seventh, eighth and ninth (Leanne Fogg, Meghan Breadmore, Savannah Pio and Alex Ciaraglia respectively) while Gaucho runners were fifth, sixth, 10th, 11th and 12th (Danielle Moreno, Ashley Beechan, Christine Cooperstein, Ariana Selix and Sarah Vitug, respectively).
Cal Poly’s men posted a 22-35 win. Mustang Dan Gonia won the overall and dual portions of the race, running the 8K course in 24:19.8. Gonia’s teammate, David Cardona, was fourth overall and second in the dual competition at 24:39.4.
Jeremy Acosta was the Gauchos’ highest finisher in fifth overall and third among UCSB-Cal Poly athletes with a time of 24:40.4. Michael Johnson was fourth for Cal Poly at 24:49.1. Anthony Masci and Juan Paredes finished fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 24:52.2 and 24:53.9.
The Gauchos return to action when both teams travel to UC Riverside for the Riverside Invitational on Sept. 17.
