Cabrillo runs away with season opener against San Marcos

San Marcos High’s Marquis Glover scored on the opening kickoff, but the Royals were unable to score for the remainder of the game in a 44-7 loss to Cabrillo High in Lompoc.

“There were a lot of turnovers on both sides of the ball,” San Marcos head coach Dale Perizzolo said.  “They capitalized and we didn’t.”

On the opening kick, San Marcos wide receiver Andrew Thayer fumbled the ball, but running back Marquis Glover picked it up and ran the ball back for the score.

Even though the team struggled for the remainder of the game, Perizzolo praised Glover’s hard running, as well as fine performances from outside linebackers Andres Valenzuela and Daniel Carreno.

Isaiah Montes and TJ Babauta rushed for two tuochdowns each for the Conquistadores.

Perizzola expects his team to move on from this Friday’s game and improve throughout the season.

“We have to get our lower bar up higher,” he said.  “We have to turn our bad plays into better plays.”

The San Marcos players wore the initials “JH” on their helmets and jerseys to honor their late head coach Jeff Hesselmeyer, who unexpectedly passed away in late July.

The Royals drop to 0-1 on the season and will play next Friday night against  Rio Mesa High at 7 p.m.
