Emily Banas recorded 16 kills and 17 digs on Saturday afternoon as SBCC downed Fullerton 3-1 at the SBCC Quad for its first women’s volleyball triumph of the season. The scores were 25-18, 25-20, 19-25, 25-11.
Heidi Van Den Oever had 14 kills and 11 digs and Arianna Kamp also had a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs for the Vaqueros (1-5). Mariah Mathews handed out 38 assists. Bianca Castro contributed five kills and four blocks.
“It feels great to get our first win,” said coach Ed Gover. “We settled down in the afternoon and played with heart and composure.”
SBCC dropped its morning match to Golden West 25-15, 25-23, 25-10. Banas, a freshman from San Pedro, had nine kills and 17 digs. Kamp added four kills and 14 digs while Van Den Oever had four kills and 11 digs. Castro had four blocks and Erika Bellitt notched four aces and nine digs.
The SBCC Quad pitted the Western State Conference against the Orange Empire Conference. In other matches, Fullerton def. Cuesta 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-23) and Golden West beat Cuesta 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-9).
The Vaqueros will play in the L.A. Pierce Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
