Axelrod called up by the White Sox

Former Santa Barbara High and SBCC  baseball star Dylan Axelrod has been called up by the Chicago White Sox

The White Sox purchased the contract of the right-hander before the second game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins and he will be available out of the bullpen.

To make room on the 40-man roster, Tony Pena (Tommy John surgery) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. The active roster is now at 31 players.

Axelrod was a combined 9-3 with a 2.69 ERA in 150 2/3 innings in the White Sox’s minor-league system this season. He had 132 strikeouts and 35 walks. At Triple-A Charlotte he was 6-1 with a 2.27 ERA in 15 outings.

The White Sox next play at Cleveland, where Axelrod could face his former high school teammate Cord Phelps.

The 26-year-old Axelrod entered the 2011 season ranked by Baseball America as having the best control in the White Sox’s minor-league system. He helped UC Irvine to a spot in the College World Series in 2007.He was signed as a free agent in August of 2009 out of the independent Frontier League not long after he had been released by the San Diego Padres.
