Westmont started the 2011 volleyball season with a pair of losses to ranked teams on the first day of the Biola University/Holiday Inn Summer Slam.
In the first match, the Warriors fell in straight sets to No. 16 Bellevue (Neb.) by scores of 28-26, 26-24 and 25-20.
Sophomore middle blocker Ciera Turner and freshman outside hitter Madison Serrano led the Warriors with 12 kills each in the opening match. Junior setter Candace Adema tallied 38 assists.
In the evening match-up, Westmont fell to No. 7 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) 3-2 (25-23, 25-18, 18-25, 21-25, 15-10). Sophomore outside hitter Tessa Martin tallied 14 kills while hitting .353 to lead the Warriors’ offense. Serrano tallied another 12 kills and Adema notched 41 assists.
The Warriors will continue tournament play against No. 14 Southern Oregon an Cal State San Marcos.
