Olympian Mark Warkentin led three swimmers under 12 minutes in the 1k ocean swim at Wednesday’s Nite Moves Series at Leadbetter Beach.
Warkentin, who swam in the 10k open-water swim at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, came in first Wednesday in a time of 11 minutes, 38 seconds. Cameron Whiting, 18, a standout prep swimmer from Renton, Wash., finished second in 11:48 and Santa Barbara’s Walker Bell, 14, placed third in 11:59.
The top female finisher was local Adrienne Binder in 12:38. In second place was world-class Michellie Jones of Carlsbad in 13:17. Jones won the 2006 Hawaii Ironman, won a silver medal at the 2000 Olympics and captured two ITU Triathlon championships.
Goleta’s John Lofthus ran away in the 5k run, winning in 16:46. Jill Himlan was the women’s winner in 18:41.
Warkentin’s fast swim set him up to win the aquathon. His time was 36:00. Andrew Kline was a close second in 36:04 and J. Ritterbeck placed third in 37:41. Dawn Schroeder was the top woman finisher in 41:15.
