James Daugherty of the Santa Barbara Swim Club shattered the Southern California record in the 11-12 boys 200-meter breaststroke Thursday at the Northern American Challege Cup in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Daugherty, 12, was timed in 2 minutes, 34.45 seconds. The previous record was 2:38.8.
He broke the record in an international meet featuring top age-group swimmers from Mexico, Canada, the Pacific region, the Pacific Northwest and Southern California.
Santa Barbara coach John Dussliere said the record is the third fastest time in the history of USA Swimming by an 11-12 year old boy.
“James has had is sights set on the SCS record for some time now and today he not only shattered that record, he placed himself in the USA Swimming record book with the second fastest time ever achieved in the event in the 11-12 age group,” Dussliere said. “James is a part of a very hard working and talented group of swimmers we are bringing up here on The Santa Barbara Swim Club.”
